📳 Mechanical Vibration Measurement
In short
Measurement of mechanical vibration acting on humans at the workplace — vibration transmitted through the upper limbs and whole-body vibration — with meters complying with PN-EN ISO 8041-1; the result is compared with the maximum admissible intensities (NDN) and action values from regulations. The test is performed according to PN-EN ISO 8041-1:2017-07; NDN — upper limbs: daily exposure 2.8 m/s², exposure of 30 min or less 11.2 m/s² (Dz.U. 2018 item 1286, Annex 2 Part B point 1). The procedure comprises 7 steps; it is used for: Assessment of exposure to vibration transmitted through the upper limbs when working with hand-held tools — NDN 2.8 m/s² (8 h) and 11.2 m/s² (≤ 30 min), action value 2.5 m/s², Assessment of exposure to whole-body vibration, e.g. of vehicle and machine operators — NDN 0.8 m/s² (8 h) and 3.2 m/s² (≤ 30 min), action value 0.5 m/s², Periodic tests and measurements of harmful factors in the working environment (Dz.U. 2025 item 949, § 13).

Overview
STATUS (as of 06.11.2026). PN-EN ISO 8041-1:2017-07 (English version, published on 18.07.2017) implements EN ISO 8041-1:2017 and ISO 8041-1:2017 and replaced PN-EN ISO 8041:2008 (Polish version) with the corrigendum AC:2008; the PKN catalogue also contains PN-EN ISO 8041-2:2021-12 (part 2). The standard specifies technical requirements and tolerances for INSTRUMENTS measuring vibration in order to assess its effect on humans, type tests or validation, periodic checks, in situ checks and the specification of vibration calibrators (scope from the PKN card) — not the way of assessing exposure at a workplace.
WHAT PN-EN ISO 8041-1 COVERS (table of contents). Reference conditions, metrological requirements for the meter (indication at the reference frequency, frequency weightings and frequency responses with tolerances, amplitude linearity, instrument noise, signal-burst response, overload and under-range indication, time averaging, running r.m.s. value), mounting of transducers, the influence of temperature, electrostatic discharges and electromagnetic fields, instrument documentation. Tests: pattern evaluation (clause 12), validation of one-off instruments (clause 13), periodic verification (clause 14) and in situ checks — including field calibration of sensitivity (clause 15) with a vibration calibrator meeting normative Annex A. Frequency weighting characteristics are given in informative Annex B, guidance on estimating the instrumental uncertainty — in Annex I.
QUANTITIES AND ADMISSIBLE VALUES (Dz.U. 2018 item 1286, Annex 2 Part B). Vibration transmitted through the upper limbs is characterised by the vector sum of the r.m.s. frequency-weighted accelerations in three directions (ahwx, ahwy, ahwz); NDN: daily exposure 2.8 m/s², exposure of 30 minutes or less 11.2 m/s². Whole-body vibration is characterised by the dominant of the accelerations in three directions with the factors 1.4awx, 1.4awy, awz; NDN: daily exposure 0.8 m/s², 30 minutes or less 3.2 m/s². The daily exposure is the energy-equivalent value for 8 hours of exposure. Definitions and measurement methods are laid down in Polish Standards — in their accreditation scopes laboratories cite PN-EN ISO 5349-1:2004 and PN-EN ISO 5349-2:2004 with A1:2015 (upper limbs) and PN-EN 14253+A1:2011 (whole-body vibration).
ACTION VALUES (Dz.U. 2005 No 157 item 1318). Action value for daily exposure: 2.5 m/s² for hand-transmitted vibration and 0.5 m/s² for whole-body vibration.
FREQUENCY OF MEASUREMENTS (Dz.U. 2025 item 949, § 13). At least once every two years if the last measurement showed an intensity above 0.2 up to 0.5 NDN; at least once a year — above 0.5 NDN. If in the last two measurements taken two years apart the intensity did not exceed 0.2 NDN, the employer may discontinue the measurements.
WHAT WE DO NOT GIVE HERE. The text of PN-EN ISO 8041-1 is not freely available (we have the table of contents) — we do not give the instrument tolerances, the calibrator parameters of Annex A or the curves of the weighting filters. The measurement strategy (number and duration of measurements, transducer positions) is in PN-EN ISO 5349-2 and PN-EN 14253, whose text we have not checked — so we do not describe it.
Method principle
The vibration acceleration is measured with a transducer (accelerometer) at the point where vibration enters the body — on the tool handle or on the seat and floor — and processed in a meter complying with PN-EN ISO 8041-1: frequency weighting, root-mean-square value, time averaging. The daily exposure is referred to 8 hours of exposure and compared with the NDN and the action values. It is calculated from the vector sum of the values for three directions (upper limbs) or from the dominant value with factors 1.4 for the horizontal directions (whole-body vibration).
